Rarely toe deformities will require surgical correction of problem tendons. The worse cases involve significant overlapping and rotation of toes. At times this is related to clinodactyly of one of the digits. In other children an overlapping toe can create difficulties with footwear and may require a surgical procedure to correct the deformity.
A small percentage of newborns are born with an overlapping toe. Common newborn foot abnormalities include metatarsus adductus clubfoot defor mity calcaneovalgus flexible flatfoot congenital vertical talus rigid flatfoot and multiple digital. This mainly occurs with the baby toe or the big toe but can happen on any toe. This condition is sometimes called webbed fingers or toes.
The child may have only a small space between two fingers or toes. A child with syndactyly has fingers or toes that are joined at the edges. Clinical photographs are shown in figures 28a and 28b.
